




“Parks’ science” / Park strolls
“Parks’ science” is a series of landscape-dendrology strolls at the selected parks of Warsaw and Mazovia organized and carried out in year 2024 by the employees of the Department of the Landscape Architecture of WULS-SGGW in Warsaw, under the patronage of Polish Dendrological Society (PTD) and Association of Polish Architects (SARP).

Project synopsis
This project is about the popularization of the social art of parks and gardens achieved as a series of strolls in the chosen objects of the landscape architecture Warsaw and in Mazovia as well as their presentation seen as the achievements of the Warsaw School of the Landscape Architecture of Warsaw University of Life Sciences – SGGW.
The strolls are pursued at the dates which are convenient for the teachers to have a direct interaction with the participants. During each outing the interesting subjects will be brought up, dealing with the landscape architecture itself as well as dendrology and contemporary environmental challenges. Meetings will be held in such a way that their topics turn out to be interesting for the participants in respect of their needs and perception.
The aim of the project is fulfilled by the SGGW lecturers as a meeting of the Warsaw inhabitants with the art of park san gardens. Landscape architects and dendrologists will guide through the world of the created landscape. This has a form of the series of lectures held during particular outings , that is in the specially selected parks and gardens of Warsaw and Mazovia, with the aim to illustrate the evolution of the style and shaping of the park’s environment. Cycle of lectures – strolls was named in the project as “Parks’ science” alluding to the original nomenclature of the first course of the Landscape Architecture of the WULS – SGGW from the beginnings of its existence in the end of the twenties of the XX century, when it was established by prof. Franciszek Krzywda-Polkowski – author of the Żelazowa Wola park.
Each stroll will be carried out jointly by the landscape architect and dendrologist, who are joined by their knowledge and respect for the nature. The first one will talk about the greenery layouts, composition of the spatial forms, sequences , pictures, openings, will focus on the parks’ secrets, those with typically „workshop” as well as historical such as historical trends in particular ages. On the other hand the dendrologist will tell about the tree species their beauty and quality, life cycle, and which of them will do well in park or street greenery. Their typical morphology features will be presented as well as their application in the landscape architecture. Also the selected examples of the venerable trees which had been growing in a given place before establishing of the park.

The project is targeted at all the enthusiasts of the landscape architecture and dendroflora and is aimed at raising of sensitivity of the general society to art of gardens and broadening the knowledge of the nature.
- Education, promotion of knowledge about history of composition and high-quality environment
- Forming sensitivity for the nature’s beauty
- Popularization of the role of the park in urban environment; what the properly composed, carefully chosen, properly maintained and protected from the negative town influences urban green should look like.
- Promotion the achievements of the graduates and scientists associated with the Landscape Architecture of SGGW, stressing their effects in the field of urban green as well as creating, designing and revalorization of parks.
- Influencing the nature-social sensitivity of the stroll participants, with the scope of increasing their skillfulness in evaluating the actions of the local self-governments in the field of creating visually better landscape of the town, at the same time providing the people with the balanced life conditions in the area of the psychology and health; our aim being that the propagated knowledge made the expectations of Warsaw inhabitants more professional in respect of a better-looking urban environment.
The aimed result to achieve is education of a group of Warsaw inhabitants (including also visitors from the outside of town, who are plentiful in Warsaw) in the field of knowledge what is the good-quality urban green; what are parks, plazas, and plants properly selected for town conditions. Our guests after a series of meetings should become more conscious and demanding (from themselves and authorities) town residents
